Two women descended from a common ancestor developed progressive dysarthria and dysphagia of insidious onset at their late middle ages. The propositus had aphasia and dementia later in her course, and died 11 and 1/2 years after onset, due to acute cerebral necrotizing vasculitis of unknown etiology in the last three months. Her cousin had illness for 3 years without aphasia nor dementia. Both patients had mild pyramidal signs, and lately developed lower cranial and spinal motor neuron involvement.
