はじめに

　エイズの原因はヒト免疫不全ウイルス（HIV-1）であるが，その感染に際し神経症状が起こることはエイズの流行の歴史上かなり初期から気付かれていた。その究極的なものがAIDS dementia complex（ADC）である（Price et al，1988）。これが注目された理由は，もちろん臨床的に重要であることもあるが，生物学的にきわめて興味のあることであったからである。本稿では，その原因であるレトロウイルスの挙動を中心に据えて，神経症状について考えてみたい。

The clinical syndrome of the AIDS dementia complex (ADC), caused by a retrovirus termed HIV-1, was recognized early in the AIDS epidemic. This syndrome greatly attracted our attentions because of clinical as well as biological importance. This review will focus on the neurological abnormalities found in HIV-infected individuals from a virological view point.
