  • Look Inside

This review describes descending projections from the cerebral cortex, basal ganglia, and amygdala to the trigeminal motor nucleus, the main constituents of which are masticatory motoneurons. Neuronal signals from pyramidal cells in layer V of the sensorimotor and premotor cerebral cortical regions are usually mediated to the trigeminal motor nucleus via interneurons in the lower brain stem, although some cerebral cortical fibers have been shown to end directly within the trigeminal motor nucleus in the macaque monkeys, chimpanzee and man.
