Neurotrophic factors support and promote surv:val and differentiation of neuronal cells to establish the architecture of complex neural network. Nerve growth factor (NGF) is the most characterized neurotrophic factor and the first member of the recently identified NGF (neurotrophin) gene family. Recent progress in the study of receptors for neurotrophin family is reviewed in this article. Major subjects are addressed as follows.

 I. Neurotrophin family : NGF acts as a target derived neurotrophic factor on sympathetic and sensory neuron in the peripheral nervous system, as well as on basal forebrain cholinergic neurons in the central nervous system. Purification and cloning of the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) revealed striking similarity in the primary structure of NGF and BDNF and led to the identification novel members of neurotrophin gene family : NT-3 (neurotrophin-3), NT-4 and NT-5.
