  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Parkinson's disease is one of the most common neurodegenerative diseases among the aged. The pathogenesis of this disease has been intensively studied. The hypothesis that some chemicals elicit parkinsonism in humans is supported by the finding of a dopaminergic neurotoxin, 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1, 2, 3, 6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP). MPTP was accidentally synthesized and induced symptoms very similar to those with Parkinson's disease, when it was administrated to humans. The pathological findings of the brain of a patient with MPTP-parkinsonism were almost the same as those in the patients with Parkinson's disease.
