  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

The authors reviewed neuroprotective and regenerative effects of neurotrophic factors on dopaminergic neuron system in the substantia nigra Cell transplantation of sympathetic ganglion and neural stem cells into the brain of parkinsonism was also described. Neurturin, a family of glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factors, showed protection of dopamine neurons and promotion of regeneration of dopaminergic nerve fibers in the striatum in Parkinson model of the rat. Neural stem cells having selfrenewal and multipotent ability were transplanted into the striatum of 6-OHDA-treated rat. Neural stem cells proliferated and transmuted to dopaminergic neurons in the host brain showing decrease of rotational movement by amphetamine injection. Possibility of clinical application of stem cells into the brain with Parkinson disease was discussed.
