Familial aggregation and twin studies have suggested that genetic factors play a significant role in susceptibility to eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa(AN)and bulimia nervosa(BN). A sib-pair linkage study suggested a linkage region for restricting AN in chromosome 1 and that for BN in chromosome 10. Candidate-gene association studies indicated associations of SLC6A4, HTR2 A and BDNF genes with AN in multiple studies. We recently found that ghrelin gene SNPs and their haplotype are associated with BN. A genome-wide association study using microsatellite markers suggested 11 candidate regions for susceptibility to AN and further analysis is in progress.
