  • Look Inside

Recently there has become interesting in stem cell biology in neurological field. Neural stem cells were characterized about ten years ago, and it has been revealed that neural stem cells have self-renewal and multi-potent capacity and are maintained from early developmental stage to adult in mammalians. Furthermore it has been shown that neural stem cells and embryonic stem(ES)cells are able to be differentiated into certain neurons in vitro and in vivo, and furthermore the application of these stem cells for an efficient neural transplantation has been being studied. However there are still many basic problems for the therapic approach. Neverthless, instead of a drug treatment, the progress of stem cell biology would allow us to establish the new therapies for neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, ALS, and spinal cord injury.
