 In the central nervous system, information processing relies on the balance between the excitatory neurons and the inhibitory neurons. Once if excitation dominates in the circuit, epileptic discharges of excitatory neurons start to destroy the circuit. Therefore, when the excitatory neurons enhance their synaptic transmission by plastic changes, inhibitory neurons must enhance their inhibitory effect and regulate the circuit. To enhance their inhibitory effects, inhibitory neurons may extend their axon branches and increase synaptic number. In addition, we propose that the inhibitory neurons will enhance their inhibitory effects by increasing the cell number in the circuit.
