  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Until very recently, it had been believed that neurogenesis never occurs in the adult human CNS. Recently, however, by establishing selective culture method of neural stem cells, it was demonstrated that neural stem cells existed in the adult human CNS. Moreover, neurogenesis was reported in the specific site of the adult human CNS. These evidences make many researchers pay attention to the therapeutic application of neural stem cells to CNS disorders. Because it is expected that neural stem cells have good adaptability to CNS, the study for using neural stem cells as a vector for applying gene therapy is also promoted in addition to the study for controlling proliferation and differentiation of neural stem cells by introducing genes in vivo or ex vivo. Neural stem cells could be a potential useful source for developing new therapy for CNS disorders.
