Ion channels are mainly investigated in the retina, cornea, and optic nerve. The increased activity of large conductance Ca2+activated K+channels may support the proliferative activity of Muller glial cells. Normal aging is accompanied by an increased expression of voltage-gated Ca2+channels, whereas in proliferative vitreoretinopathy Ca2+channel expression decreases and Na+currents are activated. The inwardly rectifying K+(Kir)channels are detected from isolated retinal pigmented epithelial cells. Vitelliform macular dystrophy was induced by abnormality of Cl-channels. Concerning the cornea, large and small conductance Ca2+activated K+channels coexist in the epithelium. The Kir channels and Ca2+activated Cl-channel exist in the epithelium and the endothelium. The cAMP activated Cl-channels also exists in the endothelium. Concerning the optic nerve, calcium channel blockers may be useful in preventing progression of visual field defect in patients with normal-tension glaucoma.
