  • Look Inside

Auditory nerve potential generated by cochlear inner hair cells is dependent upon a quite high potassium ion concentration of the cochlear endolymph, which is maintained through active secretion of the potassium ion by marginal cells of the cochlear stria vascularis. In this review, physiological functions and pathological conditions of cochlear potassium ion channels involved in the circutalation of the potassium ion within the cochlea are brifly summarized. Other ion channels, such as voltage-dependent calcium channels of sensory inner hair cells and Na+-K+-2Cl-cotransporter of marginal cells in the stria vascularis, are also known to play crucial roles in auditory sensation.
