  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

The medial prefrontal cortex has been associated with action evaluation and with reward-based action selection by human psychophysiological and monkey single-unit recording studies, respectively. A recent human brain imaging study suggested that the medial prefrotnal cortex is involved in outcome evaluation of self-generated action selection that integrated the two functions, evaluation and selection of actions. It is possible that the medial prefrontal cortex is also involved in learning adaptive action selection under uncertainty, because the medial prefrontal cortex is more active during learning than after learning. The transmission of reward prediction error signal from the dopamine cells to the medial prefrontal cortex may contribute to such learning of appropriate action selection under uncertainty.
