Shostakovich and Right Hand Weakness

ソビエト連邦の作曲家ドミートリー・ドミートリエヴィチ・ショスタコーヴィチ（1906〜1975）は，筋萎縮性側索硬化症（ALS）に罹患した著名人の1人としてしばしば論じられる。しかし，彼を17年の間悩ませた右手に始まる筋力低下が何に起因していたかはいまだ明らかではなく，また，ALSを疑ったという医師側の記録も残っていない。本論文は，優れたピアニストでもあったショスタコーヴィチが残した録音と，彼の友人たちによる記録，写真などをとおして，この20世紀最大の作曲家が罹患した神経疾患を考察してみようという試みである。

Abstract

Russian composer Dmitri Dmitrievich Shostakovich (25 September 1903-9 August 1975) is sometimes considered to be a famous person who suffered from ALS. However, there are no medical records that mention that his asymmetric weakness was due to ALS, and the exact diagnosis of his illness, which lasted over 17 years, is still obscure. The aim of this paper is to consider what kind of neurological disorder this great composer of the 20th century suffered from based on his piano recordings, photographs, and documents written by his colleagues.
