  • Look Inside

Sixteen ears with tympanosclerosis were review-ed. Nine patients were female between 50 and 59 years of age at the time of surgery. Sclerotic lesions were located around the incus (15 ears), the malleus (13 ears), and the stapes (8 ears). Tympanoplasty type I was performed in 2 ears, type III with ossicular reconstruction in 13 ears, and type IV withossicular reconstruction in one ear. The overall success rate of hearing improvement following sur-gery was 81.3%. The results were significantly better in the ears without sclerotic lesion around the stapes than in the ears with sclerotic lesion at the same site. Significantly better hearing results were observed in the ears with aeration around the foot-plate of the stapes than in the ears without aeration at the same site, as shown on preoperative CT-scan images. These results suggest that preoperative CT image is useful for estimating postoperative hearing results.
