  • Look Inside

Reye syndrome is an idiopathic childhood disease reported by Reye et al. in 1963. This disease causes acute encephalopathy, following a rapid and fatal course in most cases. We report temporal bone pathology of a patient with Reye syndrome. In the literature, only one case report of temporal bone pathology of this syndrome was described. Themain pathological findings of the temporal bone included blood flow congestion in the blood vessels of the inner ear and hemorrhage in the internal acoustic meatus. There was no degenerative changes in the sensory organ or nerves of the inner ear. Vascular congestion in the inner ear appeared to be caused by cerebral circulatory disorder related to acute encephalopathy. Hemorrhage in the inter-nal meatus appeared to be associated with sub-arachnoid hemorrhage. There was no secondary nervous degeneration. These findings may be caus-ed by a short duration of brain death and a short time lapse between death and autopsy.
