  • Look Inside

The outcome of surgery for Basedow's disease was studied in 16 patients undergone subtotal thyroidectomy in the 8-year and 5-month period between 1986 and 1994. There were 15 women and 1 man. Every patient was followed for the average of 47.9 months. Seven patients (43.8%) were euthyroid, 4 patients (25%) occult hypothyroidism, 5 patients (31.2%) remarkable hypothyroidism, and none of them were recurrent hyperthyroidism. Subtotal thyroidectomy in our department consisted of hemithyroidectomy with contralateral resection. Accurate estimation of the residual volume of the thyroid, and prevention of recurrent nerve paresis were compared with bilateral resection. However, massive bleeding and long operating time were unavoidable.
