Tnis paper describes a case of steroid-dependent sensorineural hearing loss treated with a herb medicine, Syosaikoto. A 37-year-old man com-plained of a fluctuating hearing loss in the right ear after diving. Exploratory tympanotomy proved a perilymphatic fistula, which was closed with perichondrium. However, hearing improvement was not achieved. Tentative use of steroids was effective to improve his hearing. Administration of prednisolone (PSL) more than 10mg/day im-proved the hearing, but decrease in the dose invalidated the effect. Therefore, he was diagnosed as a steroid-dependent sensorineural hearing loss. Combined use of Syosaikoto decreased the dose of PSL necessary to maintain the improved hear-ing to less than 10mg/day. This is supposed to be due to the effect of Syosaikoto to enhance the action of steroid.
