We performed transpupillary thermotherapy for sub- or parafoveal choroidal neovascularization (CNV) in 17 eyes of age-related macular degeneration. We used an infrared diode laser with the wavelength of 810 nm. Its beam size as either 1.2, 2.0 or 3.0 mm depending on the size of CNV. The power output ranged from 230 to 560 mW. The exposure time was 60 seconds. The visual acuity ranged from 0.02 to 0.6 before treatment. After follow-up for 6 to 13 months, average 8.47 months, the visual acuity improved by 2 lines or more in 2 eyes, remained unchanged in 10 eyes, and deteriorated in 5 eyes. The exudative changes improved in 13 eyes. CNV recurred in 3 eyes more than 6 months after treatment. Some eyes showed decrease in retinal thickness and closure of choriocapillaris in the treated site. The findings show that transpupillary thermotherapy may be effective for CNV in age-related macular degenera-tion under suitable power settings.
