  • Look Inside

A 26-year-old male presented with blurred vision in the right eye of 4 weeks' duration. Ophthalmoscopy showed flame-shaped retinal hemorrhage and sheathing of retinal vessels with yellow exudates in the superior nasal quadrant. Neovascularization was present from the optic disc. Systemic prednisolone and acyclovir failed to prevent progression of retinal proliferation leading to tractional retinal detachment. Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment developed following photocoagulation to the proliferation and avascular area in the affected quadrant. The retina could be reattached after vitreous surgery. Varicella-zoster virus and Epstein-Barr virus DNA were detected in the vitreous aspirate by polymerase-chain reaction. Varicella -zoster virus appeared to have cause the retinal vasculitis in this case. There is a possibility that this virus may be one of the causes of branch retinal vein occlusion in young adults.
