  • Look Inside

We evaluated 109 cases of non-insulin dependent diabetic patients regarding retinopathy, nephropathy, neuropathy and macroangiopathy. Urine albumin levels as an indicator for nephropathy. Conduction velocity in the ulnar and median nerves served as indicator for neuropathy. Average values and coefficient of variance in the R-R interval in electrocardiogram served as indicator for autonomic neuropathy, and aortic pulse wave velocity (PWV) for non specific atherosclerosis. The coded severity of retinopathy was correlated positively with with urine albumin levels (p < 0.023) , with albumin index (p < 0.0001) and with PWV (p < 0.0190) , and negatively with conduction velocity in the median sensory nerve (p < 0.0298) . The findings suggest that diabetic retinopathy progresses along with nephropathy and neuropathy. Arteriosclerosis would also progress during the early stage of retinopathy.
