To assess the effectiveness of trabeculectomy intreating low-tension glaucoma (LTG), probabilityof the post-operative intraocular pressure (TOP)control below low teens was studied retrospectivelyin a total of 68 initial trabeculectomies carried outin primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) eyes. Alife-table analysis revealed that aftertrabeculectomy with adjunctive 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), probability of the postoperative IOP control of ≤12 mmHg was 49.5±7.8% (SE) at 5-year fol-low-up, and that it was 13.6±14.6% without adjun-ctive 5-FU. Probability of the postoperative IOPcontrol of ≤10 mmHg was nil at one-year follow-up even with adjunctive 5-FU therapy.

In LTG, trabeculectomy with adjunctive 5-FU isthought to also provide the long-term postoper-ative IOP control of≤12 mmHg in at least 50% ofeyes, and should be first used for surgical manage-ment of LTG.
