  • Look Inside

A statistical study was made of retinitis pig-mentosa (RP) at the Nagasaki University Hospital in the last 10 years. The number of patients with a diagnosis of RP was 180 (97 males and 83 females), 353 eyes. The incidence was 0.7% among out-patients. The typical classical form of RP was found in 332 eyes (94.1%), and the atypical form in 21 eyes (5.9%). The average age of RP patients was 47.5 years at the initial visit to this hospital. There was no increase of RP patients in the past 10 years. In patients with the typical form of RP, visual acuity and visual fields became worse as they grew older. Myopia was a common refractive error. Ocular complications included cataract in 159 eyes, glaucoma in 16 eyes and corneal opacities in 10 eyes. RP patients were classified by ocular fundus findings (retinal opacity, retinal pigmentation, nar-rowing of vessels and optic nerve atrophy). Retinal opacity and retinal pigmentation became worse with age, but age was not related to narrowing of vessels or optic nerve atrophy.
