  • Look Inside

A 62-year-old female presented with choroidal melanoma in the right eye. We observed, addition-ally, yellowish circinate chorioretinal degeneration with epiretinal membrane in the macular area. Five years before, the eye had undergone surgery for idiopathic macular hole with diathermy and scleral buckling procedure in the macular area. The eye was enucleated and subjected to light and electron microscopic observation.

The retina in the macular area was transformed into fibrovascular tissue, composed of newly for-med vessels, fibroblasts and collagen fibers. The newly formed vessel was composed of smoothmuscles and endothelial cells without fenestrations. The retinal pigment epithelium was absent. Epir-etinal membrane was present in the macula. It was composed of fibrovascular tissue and epiretinal glial cells. This epiretinal fibrovascular membrane showed similar structure to the. intraretinal fi-brovascular membrane in the macula. The inner retina was folded due to traction by the epiretinal membrane.

It appeared that the epiretinal membrane was formed by choroidal fibroblasts extending through the retina to repair the necrotic retina consequent to earlier penetrating diathermy.
