  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

We evaluated the intraocular pressure (IOP) in 70 patients with systemic hypertension under oral medical therapy. They were free of ocular symp-toms and had not undergone ophthalmological examinations before.

Systemic calcium antagonist induced elevation of IOP in subjects with systemic hypertension of 160 mmHg or under. Oral beta-blocker led to reduction in IOP, particularly in those with controlled sys-temic hypertension.

The findings seemed to indicate that peroral administration of beta-blocker decreases the IOP and that improvement in visual field may not be through IOP-lowering effect of oral calcium antag-onist.
