We evaluated the course of visual field in 65 eyes treated by trabculotomy for primary open angle glaucoma (POAG). The intraocularpressure (IOP) was well controlled for one year or longer after surgery. The findings were compared with those in 45 eyes with POAG treated by topical medication only. We analyzed, as predictor variables, age, sex, initial state of visual field, systemic condition, duration of follow-up and the level of average IOP.

In the group treated by trabeculotomy, the pro-gression of visual field was related with the age of the patient and the status of visual field at the time of surgery. This group was also characterized by lesser correlation with the duration after surgery and associated systemic disorders. Trabeculotomy appeared to be of value in assuring more consistent effects as to visual field than concervative treat-ment in eyes with POAG.
