An automated display system for pseudoiso-chromatic plates promises to be of value in stan-dardizing the illumination, duration of display and eye-plate distance. Our two prototypes of the sys-tem were bulky and heavy. A third, smaller proto-type was built incorporating only one plate.

The plate is shaped like a Landolt's ring with a break. It is presented to the test subject with the direction of the break randomized. The test subject is asked to tell the direction of the break, eitherorally or by manipulating a joystick.

The present system proved to be still too time -consuming in instructing the test subject as to the meaning of the test and the expected mode of answering. It appeared that arabic numerals were easier to respond to than ring shaped optotypes. Recording could be done more rapidly and accu-rately by the examiner than automatically by the test subject.
