  • Look Inside

We quantitated the protein concentration in the aqueous humor in 244 eyes of 122 patients with diabetes using a laser flare-cell meter. There was a significant correlation between the protein concen-tration in the aqueous and the severity of diabeticretinopathy as graded after Fukuda's classification. We assessed the correlation of protein concentra-tion in the aqueous between the right and left eye in 52 patients with nonproliferative retinopathy. Val-ues for both eyes showed a good linear correlation (r= 0.926, p<0.001). We evaluated the effect of argon laser photocoagulation in 22 eyes with pre-proliferative retinopathy. We noted significant and marked increases in protein concentration at 1 week after photocoagulation. The values remained elevated over the pretreatment level during the ensuing 6-month period with a gradual tendency to decrease.
