We measured the retinal blood flow in 11 healthy volunteers and 7 diabetic patients using a new laser Doppler velocimetry (Canon, CLBF100). We calculated the coefficient of variation (CV) for vessel di-ameter, blood velocity and blood flow of retinal artery and vein respectively. The measurement was per-formed under standard procedure lasting about 30 minutes in 6 volunteers (group A) and less than 15 minutes in the other 5 (group B). Group B showed a significantly smaller CV for arterial velocity than group A. Dia-betic patients showed significantly larger values for arterial velocity, venous velocity and venous flow than group B. The CV for arterial and venous blood flow ranged from 10 to 14% in normal persons and from 20 to 23% in diabetic patients. While there is a limitation in detecting small changes in retinal blood flow, the pre-sent findings suggest the clinical usefulness of this method.
