  • Look Inside

We measured the blood velocity in orbital vessels in 21 healthy persons aged 19 to 41 years. We used a color Doppler imaging system, SSA-260A To-shiba, and a transducer probe of 7.5MHz. Peak velocity per second averaged 0.08±0.02m in the central retinal artery, 0.04±0.01m in the centralretinal vein, 0.31±0.10m in the proximal and 0.31±0.09 in the distal portion of ophthalmic artery. There was no difference in the values between right and left eyes. The coefficients of variation among 3 to 5 repeated measurements in 10 volunteers were 7.8%, 10.0%, 8.8% and 7.9% respectively. There was no statistical difference between two measurements in the same subject.Color Doppler imaging thus seemed to be of value in clinical measurement of absolute blood velocity, particularly of central retinal artery and vein.
