  • Look Inside

We reviewed 57 eyes treated by vitreous surgery with adjunctive silicone oil tamponade during the past 18 months. We evaluated the systemic and local factors that are involved in proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) after surgery. The series comprised 34 eyes of 32 males and 23 eyes of 22 females. Their ages averaged 60 years. Surgery was performed for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment 20 eyes, diabetic retinopathy 15 eyes, age-related macular de-generation 15 eyes, choroidal neovascularization 6 eyes, and endophthalmitis 1 eye. PVR developed postoperatively in 17 eyes (30%). There was no significant correlation between PVR and systemic factors including underlying disease, age or gender of patients. PVR was correlated neither with the number of surgeries nor with the duration of intraocu-lar silicone oil. PVR was significantly more frequent in eyes receiving cryocoagulation and less in eyes with retinal de-tachment involving one quadrant or less. These last findings are in accord with the past reports.
