  • Look Inside

A 34-year-old male sustained injury to his left eye while experimenting with frequency-doubled Nd:YAGlaser (wavelength:532nm) . The power output was 10 mJ and the exposure was 0.01 second. When seen the same day,his corrected visual acuity was 0.5 left. Funduscopy showed a white laser burn in the fovea and retinal hemorrhage. Afull-thickness macular hole was detected one week later with the visual acuity of 0.6.The affected eye underwent vitrectomywith removal of internal limiting membrane 6 weeks later after injury because of decreased visual acuity, persistent macularhole and metamorphopsia. Six months after surgery, the macular hole has closed with the visual acuity of 1.2 in spite ofthe presence of laser scarring. This case illustrates that this surgical modality may be effective for macular hole secondaryto accidental laser injury.
