A 78-year-old female presented with impaired visual acuity in her left eye since 17 months before. The visual acuity was 0.06 corrected with -10.0 diopters. Funduscopy showed posterior staphyloma, macular hole and serous retinal detachment in the area of staphyloma. During surgery, the epiretinal membrane was removed and was subjected to histochemical studies. By hematoxilin - eosin staining, the membrane consisted of thin fibrous tissue and partially of thickened cellular tissue. Masson trichrome stain showed the fibrous layer to consist of collaenous matrix. The cellular layer was positively stained by anti-glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) . The findings were similar to those of idiopathic macular hole. It appeared that the membrane originated from vitreous collagen and was modified by retinal glial cell proliferation.
