We reviewed surgically treated 29 eyes of idiopathic macular hole. An optical coherence tomography (OCT) was used to identify the morphological features of macular hole prior to surgery. The duration of macular hole was positively correlated with the anterior and posterior diameter of the hole, and the hole index with was the posterior diameter of the hole subtracted by the length of the slope of the hole. The postoperative visual acuity was negatively correlated with the anterior and posterior diameter of the hole, and the hole index. The findings show the potential usefulness of OCT in assessing the surgical outcome.
