We followed up two males, aged 69 and 71 years, for central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) . Epipapillary vascular loops had been formed seen when 9 months, and 7 and 8 months, respectively, after onset of CRAO. Indocyanine green videoangiography was performed in both cases. In the first case, there were 6 epipapillary vascular loops, dye filling in which started simultaneously with that in choroidal arteries. Arterial branches in the retina further received blood from the epipapillary vascular loops. There was no dye inflow into the central retinal artery throughout. In the second case, there were 3 epipapillary vascular loops. Dye started to fill in one of them simultaneously with that in choroidal arteries and the central retinal artery. This epipapillary vascular loop anastomosed with one of the retinal arteries. These findings show that epipapillary vascular loops in chronic CRAO may serve as collaterals between the choroidal and retinal arterial systems.
