  • Look Inside

We quantitated the pressure in the anterior chamber, as the setting of variables during phacoemulsification surgery is dependent on the judgment of stability of the anterior chamber. A hooked needle was connected to a blood-pressure monitoring system and was introduced into the anterior chamber through a limbal port during surgery. Intracameral pressure measurement was performed during no-aspiration, during constant aspiration and during surge phenomenon with trough. The intracameral pressure changed according to irrigation pressures, vacuum pressures, flow rates and the types of phacoemulsifier. Continuous monitoring of intracameral pressure detected the surge phenomenon and contributed to proper setting of surgical variables. The intracameral pressure monitoring was thus useful in stabilizing the intraoperative intraocular environment. A safer surgical procedure will become possible by feedback system of intracameral pressure monitoring system to the phacoemulsification apparatus.
