We measured the thickness of nerve fiber layer in the macula in 30 eyes. The series comprised 15 eyes of 10 glaucoma patients and 15 eyes of 15 normal persons. The ages averaged 58.7±11.2 years in the former group and 50.6 ±21.5 years in the latter. In the glaucoma group, the mean deviation by Humphrey Field Analyzer program 30-2 averaged -21.83±6.4 dB. The disc and macular areas were measured three times with a Nerve Fiber Analyzer II (NFATM). The thickness of retinal nerve fiber layer in the macula averaged 51.9±9.31 gm in the normal group and 52.5±13.3 gm in the glaucoma group. The difference between the two groups was not significant. The thickness temporal to the disc averaged 46.56±10.1βm in the normal group and 48.17±15.5 um in the glaucoma group. The difference was not significant. The findings show the difficulty of assessing the macula with the present technical set-up.
