Posterior fundus area is the main target of OCT examinations in diabetic retinopathy. It is possible to identify retinal edema, hemorrhage, hard or soft exudates, vitreous detachment, retinal detachment, detachment of retinal pigment epithelium, intraretinal splitting, preretinal membrane and proliferating membrane. In retinal edema, the retina is thickened due to swelling and appears as low reflective area on OCT. In cystoid edema, the macula is swollen and protruded. Exudates are characterized by high reflectivity located in the sensory retina. The area posterior to exudates appear as dark space. It is possible to identify subclinical retinal detachment. The space caused by intraretinal splitting shows low reflectivity. Use of OCT allows detailed observation of the fundus in diabetic retinopathy. It is noninvasive and can be repeated in the follow-up observations.
