We inserted a U-shaped silicone tube into the canaliculi in 68 patients with epiphora due to obstruction or stenosis of the lacrimal system. The tube was removed after an average of 19 weeks. The treatment was successful in 41 patients (60%). It was successful in 5 of 14 patients (36%) with chronic dacryocystitis and in 19 of 29 patients (66%) with nasolacrimal duct obstruction. It was successful in 2 cases each of lacrimal punctal stenosis and canalicular trauma. Canalicular stenosis persisted or recurred in 6 of 11 patients with canalicular atresia and in 5 of 14 patients with chronic dacryocystitis. The findings show the usefulness of the present therapeutic modality in the treatment of obstruction or stenosis of the lacrimal system as the first choice. Due attention is necessary in the selection of patients and in posttreatment follow up.
