Bacteriological examination of nunchaku-style silicone tube retained in the lacrimal passage

（P3-2-14）　涙道閉塞の治療として留置したヌンチャク型シリコーンチューブの内容を，抜去後に培養し，微生物学的に検索した。対象は24眼で，チューブの留置期間は1から15か月，平均61か月であった。チューブからは17本（71％）が菌陽性であり，結膜嚢からは10眼（42％）で菌が検出された。留置期間が6か月を超えると検出率が大きかった。チューブが感染源になる可能性があり，長期間の留置には注意が必要である。

We examined the bacterial flora in the content of nunchaku-style silicone tube. The tube had been retained in 24 eyes with nasolacrimal duct obstruction for 1 to 15 months, average 6.1 months. Bacterial organism was isolated in 17 tubes (71%) and in the conjunctival sac in 10 eyes (42%). The incidence of bacteria in the tube increased when it had been retained longer than 6 months. The findings show that silicone tubes retained for longer period may induce another infection and that due precaution is necessary regarding this possibility.
