We evaluated the clinical usefulness of an automated noncontact tonometer (CT-70, Topcon Co, Tokyo) . Tonometery was performed in 378 eyes of 259 outpatients by CT-70 and Goldmann applanation tonometer (GAT). Average of three consecutive measurements in each eye served as the tonometric value by CT-70. There was a high correlation between the values by CT-70 and GAT (p < 0.0001). There was a tendency for the values by CT-70 to be lower than those by GAT. Following regression line was obtained : CT-70=0.823 + 0.911 × GAT. The standard deviation of difference between pairs of measurements by CT-70 and GAT was 2.1 mmHg. Of all CT-70 readings, 97.4% lay within the permissible tolerance area for noncontact tonometers.
