We measured the intraocular pressure (IOP) in 62 eyes following posterior chamber lens implanta-tion surgery using two methods: applanation tonometer by Goldmann and pneumatic noncontact tonometer by American Optical. IOP was measured 6 to 8 hours, one day and two days after surgery. When compared with the preoperative level, the IOP increased significantly at each of the 3 post-operative measurements. While the applanation and noncontact measurements showed parallel values, the latter tended to show lower readings than the former. There was no ocular complication due to tonometery by either method. The findings show that pneumatic tonometry is reliable and safe when performed during the early postoperative period after intraocular lens implantation.
