We surveyed 61 patients treated by vitreous surgery for unilateral idiopathic macular hole by sending a questionnaire. Response was obtained from 51 patients, 84%. Preoperative subjective symptoms comprised metamorphopsia 75%, central scotoma 69% and blurred vision 69%. Impaired sense of perspective or stereopsis had been noted in 30%. After surgery, metamorphopsia improved in 72%, central scotoma in 64% and blurred vision in 62%. The incidence of remarkable improvement in symptoms was more frequently noted by patients when the condition had persisted for 6 months or less until surgery, the hole size was 600 i m or less, or the postoperative visual acuity was 0.6 or better. The postsurgical state was evaluated as satisfactory by 88% of the cases.
