We reviewed the outcome and problems after vitreous surgery for ocular sarcoidosis in 6 eyes of 5 patients. All the cases showed impaired visual function due to vitreous opacity or cystoid macular edema despite previous corticosteroid treatments. The visual acuity improved in all the eyes after surgery. There was no instance of recurrence of vitreous opacity or retinal vasculitis. The cystoid macular edema responded partially to surgery in 2 out of 3 eyes. Temporary ocular hypotension developed in 2 eyes after surgery. The present findings show that vitreous surgery may be effective for ocular sarcoidosis in improving the visual function, in removing opacity in the optic media and in preventing recurrence of intraocular inflammations.
