We examined 12 eyes of 6 patients with central areolar choroidal atrophy. The atrophic macular lesion showed hypofluorescence during the late phase of indocyanine green (ICG) angiography in all the eyes, suggesting atrophic choriocapillaris. This feature was independent of the presence or absence of tissue staining in late-phase fluorescein angiogram. Areas surrounding the atrophic lesion, which showed window defect by fluorescein angiography, showed well-demarcated hypofluorescence in 6 eyes and spotty hypo-fluorescence in 6 by ICG angiography. Hypofluorescent area by ICG angiography was more extensive than that by fluorescein angiography in 4 eyes. ICG angiography was thus useful in locating the extent of affected lesion at the level of choriocapillaris.
