  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

We evaluated 111 patients with rheumatoid arthritis regarding ocular complications. Keratocon-junctivitis sicca was present in 19 patients, 17%, of whom 6 were free of objective symptoms. Scleritis was present in 1 patient, 1%. Patients with keratoconjunctivitis sicca showed significantly higher levels of rheumatoid factor and immunoglobulin M and lower levels of HDL-cholesterol than those without. There were no differences in Lansbury index, C-reactive protein and erythrocyte sedimentation rate in both groups. Ophthalmological follow-up in patients with rheumatoid arthritis is recommended for the early detection of ocular complications and for monitoring the systemic course of the disease.
