  • Look Inside

We estimated the reading error of three Hirschberg procedures. A 33-year-old healthy male served as test subject. He was asked to fixate at one of randomly presented point maximally 30 degrees from the center along a horizontal arc. Ten ophthalmologists and orthoptists served as examiners. The reading of simulated strabismic eye position differed among examiners with ±5.3 degrees for the mean 95% confidence limits. The confidence limits did not improve by using a millimeter rule. The 95% confidence limit of discriminating task, in which whether the corneal light reflex deviates to the right or left, gave ±1.8 degrees as the mean value. While the Hirschberg test is reliable in detecting manifest strabismus, quantita-tion of deviation proved to be less precise.
