Quality of life in glaucoma patients

　緑内障患者のquality of life （QOL）に関する調査を独自のアンケート表を用いて行い，精神面，身体面，社会面，経済面，家庭面の5要素について，スコア化したうえで性別，年齢，病期，治療との関連を検討した。また手術を受けていない患者の手術願望，手術を受けた患者の術後の感想も検討した。その結果，精神面で最もQOLの低下がみられ，経済面でも最も影響が少なかった。各要素とも，加齢とともに，また病期の進行とともにQOLは低下した。治療との関係では，投薬を受けている群にQOLの低下がみられた。手術を受けたいと答えた患者が全体にかなり高率にみられた。「手術を受けて良かった」と回答した患者が多くみられた。今回の調査結果から緑内障の治療にあたっては，患者のQOLの向上を考えた治療，特に精神的な不安を取り除くことの重要性が確認された。

We evaluated the quality of life (QOL) in 278 patients with various types of glaucoma. QOL was scored by taking 5 factors into account: mental, physical, social, economical and familial factors. We also assessed sex, age, severity of visual field defects and therapeutic status. QOL deteriorated according to age and progression of visual field defects. The mental factor was the most affected and the economical one the least. Most patients desired glaucoma surgery. Majority of operated patients expressed favorable impression regarding surgery. Ophthalmologists ought to consider the quality of life as an important feature in the treatment of glaucoma patients.
