Economical implications of glaucoma in Japan

　緑内障は現在でも失明原因の上位にある疾患である。緑内障患者が失明のために就労が差し支えると，その経済的損失は莫大なものになることは明らかである。そこで緑内障から生じる経済的代価を緑内障に関わる直接的費用（医療費，リハビリテーション費用，養護費），および緑内障患者による視力障害のために生じる間接的費用（逸失利益）として算出した。その結果，緑内障で治療を受けている患者数は38万人，緑内障による失明者は4万3000人と推計された。緑内障にかかる直接費用は11施設のデータから598億円，厚生省のデータからは527億円と推計された。緑内障による失明者の逸失利益（間接的費用）は620億円と推計された。

Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blind-ness. Major economic impacts will result when the glaucoma reaches a certain stage which disables the patients in their occupational activity. We evaluated the financial aspects of glaucoma as-sociated with its treatment. Data were obtained through nation-wide glaucoma survey, national census, Ministry of Health and Welfare, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Labor, Japan Ophthalmolo-gists Association and 11 ophthalmological institu-tions. The glaucoma patients under treatment totalled 380,000 of which 43,000 were socially blind. Total direct costs were estimated to be 59.8 billion yen by 11 institutions and 52.7 billion yen by the Ministry of Health and Welfare. Indirect costs were estimated to be 62 billion yen.
