  • Look Inside

We reviewed a consecutive series of 23 cases of ocular toxocariasis. Unilateral involvement was the rule. The series comprised 21 adults and 2 children.According to the classification by wilkinson, 2 eyes showed diffuse nematode endophthalmitis, 6 showed posterior pole granuloma, and 14 showed peripheral inflammatory mass. Treatment was conducted by systemic medication in 5, focal retinal photocoagulation in 5 and vitrectomy in 13. Complications included secondary ocular hypertension in 5 eyes and traction retinal detachment in 3. Visual outcome was correlated with the location of the lesions and duration of inflammation. The findings show that early retinal photocoagulation and timely vitrectomy may be neces-sary to prevent longstanding intraocular inflammation in ocular toxocariasis.
